Track the source without personal data
Give each test a consistent campaign name and tag the destination with source, medium, and campaign parameters when your analytics setup supports them. Google’s GA4 URL builder documentation explains how UTM values identify referring campaigns. Do not put subscriber email addresses or other personal information in tracking URLs.
Record a simple funnel
- Ordered clicks: the volume in your purchase agreement.
- Reported delivered clicks: the vendor’s fulfillment count under its rules.
- Observed visits: page activity your own analytics actually measures.
- Confirmed leads: completed valid opt-ins.
- Sales and refunds: reported by your own checkout or affiliate dashboard.
Reconcile differences carefully
Click counts and sessions are not identical by design. Browser privacy settings, repeated visitors, redirects, timezones, filtering, and tracking implementation can cause differences. A mismatch is a question to investigate, not automatic proof of fraud. Preserve timestamped reports and your agreed click definition.
Calculate clear metrics
These metrics are descriptive; no single “good” threshold applies to every offer. Explore scenarios with the calculator and check seller terms with the vendor checklist.
Define a minimal event map
| Event | Where it comes from | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Ordered clicks | Quote or order record | That delivery occurred |
| Eligible clicks | Provider's final report | That every destination page loaded |
| Observed visits | Your page analytics under its rules | That visitors were qualified |
| Valid leads | Form or subscription system | That subscribers will purchase |
| Attributable sales | Checkout, CRM or merchant records | That every later sale was caused by this send |
Give each send its own ID
Use a campaign identifier that names the provider and test period without including a visitor's name, email address or other personal data. Confirm that redirects preserve the identifier and that the final page loads in normal and private browser sessions. Test form submission, confirmation and checkout events with accounts you control. Keep source parameters and attribution settings consistent during the campaign.
Reconcile before interpreting
Compare the contracted and provider-reported click counts first. Then compare provider events with observed visits, keeping time zones, repeat-click rules and script limitations in mind. Finally calculate the outcomes you actually wanted: valid sign-ups, attributed purchases and realized revenue. If the page changed mid-send, split the report into before and after periods.
Protect the data you collect
Do not request a seller's raw subscriber list to “verify” traffic, and do not send email addresses in publicly logged URLs. Use aggregate numbers for a dispute whenever possible. When follow-up is involved, respect the permission people gave you and the obligations applicable to your email program.
